MOMs... and Good-by

Today was our final Story Hour until next fall, so it was bittersweet as we celebrated upcoming Mother's Day.  Before Story Hour began the girls chose to play with their favorite puzzle, one where they can create silly faces. When it was time to start I had puffy princess stickers for the girls and we sang our opening song.

Even "little sister" found some of the toys to be very fascinating.

Our first book was My Monster Mama Loves Me So by Laura Leuck. It was all about the things Monster Mama does so Little Monster knows she loves him. It gave us an opportunity to talk about things our moms do for us. It also brought about some "Eeeews!" and "Yucks!" as the mama in the book fed her son bug juice when he became ill and made sure he had fed his pet spider before going to bed.

We went right on to read a second book, Mother, Mother, I Want Another by Maria P. Robbins. This was a cute story about a little mouse who cries after his mom kisses him goodnight and says, "I want another, Mother!".  Even though his mom is shocked, she tries to find another mother for him by asking many of her animal friends to be his mama so he will stop crying and go to sleep. In turn they come to the mouse house and sing and bring him some unusual gifts. You must read this one to find out about the misunderstanding that had happened.

At the craft table this morning moms and daughters worked together to make choices while building a vase with a floral bouquet for the wall or fridge. They began by selecting the scrapbook paper pattern they wanted for their vase, tracing a pattern and cutting it out. When they glued it to the background paper the top of the vase was left unglued. This allowed flower stems to be selected and inserted. Next they selected colors for their flower bases and the style of punch to use for each. They could also choose the next two layers of the flowers, or leave them plain if they wished. The very final step was to select silk flower leaves from a selection I provided and add them to the stems. Then the girls admired each other's projects.

Now we asked the moms to leave the room so we could work on something secret. This caused the girls to get very excited. We walked the moms down the hallway to the senior dining area where I provided coffee and juice with "goodies" [assuring the girls that they would get some also, once we were finished].

When the girls and I went back into the room I gave them a prepared yellow cardstock with "I Love You..." printed on the lower front corner, and "...to PIECES!" printed in the inside. There was also a large heart drawn in their. The girls tore pieces of different colored papers [their choice] and glued them into the heart. On the front of the card they wrote "MOM", and also signed their names inside.
Although they had the choice of saving their cards until Mother's Day, everyone chose to give it to their mom right away.

After that the girls got to have a treat and before they went home they were given a goody bag from the library filled with a book and some fun things.

Please watch for future posts about summer programming at the library. Hope to see you during the summer!
